The poor rains during the last three consecutive seasons have caused widespread and worsening drought conditions across most parts of Somalia. This has resulted in failed crop harvests, widespread water shortage, triggering abnormal livestock migration, decline in livestock production and increased livestock deaths. Water and food prices have continued to rise sharply. Since then the drought severity has notably worsened. As of January 2022, most parts of the country are experiencing Severe drought conditions, with Gedo region and adjacent areas already in Extreme drought. Gedo region, which was previously less
affected is now experiencing Moderate to Severe drought conditions following an influx of both humans and livestock and a rapid depletion of rangeland conditions.
Drought has devastated herders\livelihoods as it exhausted pastures and water sources, NARDO being one of the patners in GEDO REGION said, stressing that supporting them to get back on their feet and prevent further livestock losses are crucial in the Region, where hunger has been on the rise this year. The drought has led to a significant number of animals dying or falling ill, particularly in GEDO region.
“I had a lot of livestock before the drought started,Now that drought have ravaged not only animals but also human beings I lost a lot of livestock,I was with my livestock in Harari Region in Ethiopia before I moved to Qansaxley in Dollow District,Gedo region in search of pastures.She also added that the region experienced serious drought that led to the death of her livestocks”
Hooyo Sadia became the beneficiary of Water trucking activity that she benefited from NARDO to water her remaining cows to sustain its living. She at least treasured the activity since she never had water to offer it to her cows.
