Emergency water trucking in Gedo region.

We believed that… is a legitimate response during drought because it plays a very important role in saving human and animal lives in areas with no permanent water sources. Addressing water scarcity in communities that are affected by the drought and assisting them in their villages will reduce the pool factor of humanitarian assistance delivered at IDP settlements.

We observed that… Water trucking will help the communities in many ways by reducing the water shortage stress, others engage themselves with daily casual work. However, water trucking is a short-term solution for water scarcity and the number of trips was limited and was challenging in addressing the population’s needs until they receive rain.

 From that we learned that… provision of clean, safe, and adequate water is essential for humans and will create a positive impact and better well-being. Having proper water storage/reservoirs will ensure sufficient water for the communities by harvesting rainwater and storing it for the future. The number of trips supported to the sites was not enough to solve the water needs of the community considering the current drought and the river drying.

Therefore, we will…. Recommend construction and rehabilitation of community water reservoirs (barked/water pan) for water collection during the rain. We will also recommend continuing the water trucking support until a permanent solution is achieved and increasing the number of trips per site to address the high needs.
