Water source rehabilitation (Shallow wells) in Luuq, Gedo region.

We believed that water is essential and important for people’s lives. Rehabilitation of water sources (shallow wells) is the most sustainable solution for areas with insufficient water to provide a continuous water supply for IDPs homestead and rural communities with fresh groundwater.

We observed that the rehabilitated shallow wells will have a high yield of water and delivers enough water for the communities to utilize for household and livestock consumption if the wells are properly managed. A high percentage of rural and IDP communities are facing widespread water shortage due to the prolonged drought and the condition may worsen in January-April since the existing water source daily will reduce due to dry up of the river (Dawa and Juba).

From that, we learned that helping the vulnerable community with the rehabilitation of shallow wells will address the scarcity of water in the IDPs and Rural areas and will act as a medium and long-term solution if the infrastructure is properly maintained.

Therefore, we will recommend the rehabilitation of shallow wells as well as boreholes and other existing water sources with a complete water supply system (solar-powered system with a tank and water kiosks) to get long-term solutions for water shortages during drought season.
